Definitive Release!

Posted by Nicolas (permalink)

Here we are, I unveiled the mirror list in the download page. I think it should pretty much do the trick. I'm still amazed at how much mirrors people provided us. I even had to deny a few because it was way too much.

Head up to the Download Page, and enjoy!
Portal: Prelude Banner

For a while, I'll stop answering and posting new materials and just let people play alone and enjoy or insult the game alone. If you need help, don't forget the forums.

VERY IMPORTANT GLITCH!
Firstly, I beat the game. Wow.
But. In the chamber where you'll have to guide the companion cube through walls which you need to rise, and use the cube on a button, you dont have to use the cube. You can just stand on the button and shoot a portal inside. That way you can win the chamber with ease!

this mod is all but fun.

it stacks frustration on and on, tireing and torturing the player with unnecessary difficult jumps, sadistic unfunny dialogues, spiting events, time sinking hidden buttons and doors, dead ends, dying for tries, false integrity in story, lack of interesting motivating puzzles, counter-straightforwardness, advancing on luck, and whatnot more...

all that soul portal has, in gameplay and story, does not live here anymore.

Sounds good to us, because it's not Portal. If you want original Portal gameplay, go play Portal.

Oddly enough, it feels like the same Anonymous guy talking shit is the same person doing it over and over again. Basically a troll, as trolls post in an attempt to get an emotional response of sorts. Craving for attention. Hence the term, 'dont feed the trolls'. xD

this mod is shit to play, the story sucks and totally overhyped...

 October 10, 2008 8:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said :
I dislike it simply because of how their "New story" completely ignores the fluff already established by valve. Many mods have tried to add on the the existing world that valve has made. The good ones know that they can't contradict the established plot if anybody is going to take them seriously. Just look at Point Of View (although POV is now out of date Plot wise after HL2 came out)

 October 10, 2008 9:25 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said :
That's more like it Anonymous guy above me. There is a difference between 'criticism' and 'constructive criticism'. Basically saying "omfg this mod sucks massive di*k omfg omfg" about four thousand times is basically non-constructive criticism. You're not saying what you THINK is bad about the mod, and what you liked about it.

Basically you're telling everyone you're likely a 14 year old joke on the Internet. Internet being the key word there. Telling them what you thought was bad is good. Just insults are not.

 October 10, 2008 9:41 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said :
This is no good. Why didn't you ask people on the internet to do the voices? You wanted to make this game without GLaDOS, instead having humans supervise and instruct the player, but there isn't any emotion when using these Microsoft Sam voices (or whichever software you used). Humanity isn't expressed by voice, humanity is expressed by emotion.
There are hundreds, nay, thousands of people on the internet who would gladly record their voices for the chance to be in a video game. But I suppose the people you asked just didn't want their names or voices used in a game with such a poor script. And I don't mean your grammar, I can understand that since you're French, but you can't take these guys seriously. These people are supposed to be scientists! They sound like a bunch of morons.

And I don't even want to touch on the awful level design. I'm sorry, I was looking forward to this when the trailer came out because more Portal is more glee, but you clearly don't understand "thinking with portals."

I downloaded this game 10:30 this morning and after attempt after attempt at numerous points, taking a break, returning, taking another break and then returning again I am happy to say just 5 mins ago. just beat it...AAAAND!

I have never felt so much of a sense of accomplishment in beating a game as I did this because I had to work for it, it wasn't a bloody run through, with targets surrounded in neon glow of what you're supposed to shoot or look for and then and keep running, especially on 18 and 19 and the very end, I mean WOW I don't want to say anything to spoil it until enough people have beaten it but I have so many questions and it was just, friggin' awesome.
Thank you Nicolas and everyone who helped with this game, it was awesome. 2 Thumbs Up Mate.

WOW, nice mod, i could not get trough the game without cheating, but you guys did an awesome job on most levels.

the voices where a little "cheap", but hey, it's a free mod and i can't complain ;)

The story was interesting, not good, but a nice twist and [SPOILER] letting the player turn on GLaDOS was an GREAT move ;)[SPOILER].

Compliments to you guys.

I just want to commend you on a kick-ass mod. I started playing it yesterday, and I gotta hand it to you, it's bloody annoyingly difficult. Just like we like it:D I haven't completed it yet, but so far, so good.

I could criticize some stuff here (mainly the voices) but this is free, and you have put a heck of a lot of work into it, so you guys get nothing but respect!

And, the hyping of this mod over this last month was just ingenious, love it.

Thanks

ok here's my little review of the game:

first of all GREAT job with this awesome mod nicolas ^^
the level design is great and it's far more challenging than the original portal.the ending...just amazing...really I didn't expect that the ending would be THAT good ^^

ok now to the negative aspects of the game:

of course, it would have been better if you had used real voices, but to me it was okay since you offer this game for free ^^
the difficulty...omg O.o
I actually don't know what to write about this topic...at least you could have warned us before releasing such a difficult game.
you simply told us something like "this game will be harder than the original portal game". moreover you said that we should learn the "basics of portal" again if we aren't used to portal anymore. after completing prelude, this piece of advice sounds rather like a joke. the basics of portal? in my mind you'll never make it through the game without having a lot of patience, knowing nearly every single "advanced technique" and sometimes even be lucky.nearly every single test chamber is harder (sometimes even unfair) than the advanced chambers of portal and this is the reason why you'll either love this mod or absolutely hate it.when you first told us about the difficulty I thought (and I'm pretty sure most of us thought that way) that prelude would be as hard as the advanced chambers of the original portal and that the advanced chambers of prelude would be even harder, but still not THAT frustrating. but what we got is a game that just went way too far with the difficulty. I can imagine that some of the "former" prelude fans who waited eagerly for the release of your mod are now very frustrated with your game because they simply can't beat it.

so basically, you should have announced prelude in advance as a game made for hardcore gamers only...well in fact even hardcore gamers will have a lot of trouble completing prelude.

a good solution would have been offering 2 different modes of prelude...the "normal" and the "hardcore" mode, but I know that would have cost too much time and work.

I personally LOVE your mod, because I love challenges and I'm a great portal fan :)

I don't know if I was only not paying enough attention to test chamber 17 (I think it was 17 but I'm actually not sure xD) but you begin the test chamber and you have no idea what to do. there's this moving platform which kills you if you don't place your portals fast enough and then the platform comes to a dead end. the problem is that you try so hard to stay ON the platform AND survive that you don't pay enough attention to the puzzle...maybe you could change this room a bit, cause you will die for sure 3 or 4 times the first time you get into the room, because of simply not knowing what to do.

 October 11, 2008 5:24 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said :
^to be honest your making out as if the game is the hardest thing ever... which is far far from the truth... no doubt the game was difficult in some areas but it definitely wasn't unfair or insanely hard.. infact i beat this game faster than i beat the original portal.

Here is my thoughts on the game.

I do agree that the voices could be better, as they lack emotion, but it is totally tolerable and understandable as well. Did notice some odd sentences as well...that dont really make any sense. :P

But of course, you're French so...Yeah. My grammar sucks in case you did not notice.

I thought the game was rather difficult. I had to cheat many times, and became frustrated as well. I did enjoy the story though, and the end was nice too. Still had fun, even if I was completely confused most of the time. This is coming from the guy who has played over 80 hours of Portal since release. :P

This game is the hardest game I have ever played! But thats a good thing because a game has never challenged me as much as this one. :)

Thanks for making a Great Mod to Portal! I am on level 19 and have yet to finish it. The voices of the characters could be improved and the turret section on 17 took me an hour to get past.

Also you should try to get valve to get you on the portal team. There were a ton of interesting ideas and gameplay in this mod.

This is a great Mod. I've played it through 5, 6, 7 times. Each time I find something new or figure out a different way to do this or that. Its awesome. In fact, a friend voiced over Mike for Test Chambers 1-12. It a rather low-medium quality recording, and his voice isn't quite right (at all, no offense if you read this), but it is kinda cool. It took him about an hour to voice those parts and put me together a rar.

Difficulty-5/5: Perfect for one who has mastered "thinking with Portals". Tough for just about anything less, but doable for all. Portal Standard Difficulty x2. But, I might even have to say is as thus: Portal = 1/2 Difficulty of Prelude, cuz I like Prelude more.
Length-5/5: First time through, slightly longer. Getting held up on one spot or another is the major time-stealer (especially the jumping puzzle in chamber 19).
Story-3/5: Good, but contradicting in some ways (GLaDOS announced/created the Bring Your Daughter to Work Day (CJohnson's notes on aperturescience.com)).
Fun-5/5: Yes. Very. I personally enjoyed every bit of it. The choice of music where it was used was SUPERB.
Shortcomings-4/5(1 being alot, 5 being none): One or two. Major one being the fact that I shot a total of 5 portals between receiving the half-portal gun and finishing the game. The Boss battle could have used being a bit more portal heavy, although it was intense. I can now complete the Boss Battle after one swing-sequence.
All in all, I give this game a 4.4/5. Not that this should matter to anybody, but let this show that one more person loves this Mod. Oh wait, you get a bonus point for the badgers... Revised score: 5.4/5

I guess that means you win?

Just finished the game and liked it, mostly cause it showed me what happend in here before (and exactly as I thought happend, although you made it up)

so you guys get a big plus from me!

For people who haven't played it yet: "It's a great mod and a really must-play for portal players who liked it."

Keep up the good work if theres any other project thats comming along.

no, the activation of GLaDOS was one of the events planned for Bring Your Daughter to Work Day. that's what it says in the notes.

in relation to my above comment, that means the story here actually gives details on what valve stated, instead of contradicting it.

This game is so unbelievably difficult, i had to give up after 4 rooms. Yes. FOUR!! I even got the third room by luck. I just kept trying the same thing over and over, and all of a sudden, the game decided that i can make this specific jump (without me changing anything). That was the moment i knew i would never play this game to the end

I was excited by the news of this. A portal game with story! And then disapointed when it turns out this is just the same thing AS portal. Hoops and jumps. Oh yay - not. I awake in a glass cube with no explanation of how I got there and am expected to accept that it's ok to have a gun that shoots holes in walls and it's ok for them to try to kill me. The "story" appears to come from two synthetic sounding people - pretty annoying not to mention shoddy voice acting which ruins the mood. I'll watch the walkthrough videos to save me the pain of putting myself though more of this drudge. The original was fun because it was unique. This all looks like the same old thing these days.
