DDoS Attack

Posted by Nicolas (permalink)

Our server is currently beeing DDoS attacked (midnight GMT+02).
Not that we care so much, we don't need this website up and running to work on the mod (we only need the server), but that's freaking hilarious to see that someone has been so frustrated by what we did that he decided to shut down our website by attacking us.

Basically, that's just thousands of trojan-contamined zombie computers from around the world that are flooding the server with random HTTP requests. No big deal, and there's not much we can do. I don't have the time to search for a solution, so it may stay in this situation until the attacker decides to stop... if he ever decides to stop. There's already a firewall running and I just setup a random protection. I don't know if it does something useful but it's better than nothing.

On a side note, we finished the walkthrough for the 19 test chambers and will put it online tomorrow if this attack is finished.

Edit 9:00 AM: looks like that attack is now finished? I don't really know, I don't have any access to the server right now, but it seems accessible again.

It's obvious, the attacker has no life.

Sorry to hear that, as much as I didn't like the need for precision in some of the test chambers, DDOS attacks are bad (also illegal, at least in the USA)

Hope it doesn't wind up taking down the server

O.K.

So I just completed prelude and I have to say, I was amazed. Yes there were some instances where it was practically impossible to find out what needed to be done, but that's what I missed in Portal. The team involved with creating this mod have truly taken "thinking with portals" to a new high and have presented an incredibly challenging game.

Some people complained that Portal was to easy and to short, now they complain that your prelude is to hard, there's just no pleasing some people.

On the other hand, having completed the prelude, I have to say no matter how hard it was the feeling of fulfillment I received for having completed the game far outweighed any bad that could be said towards the game.

Thanks for your great work

It sure is somewhat wrong to attack our server but... well... that's it. We just deal with it.
Anyway, thanks for your feedback.

I agree with Nathan. It would be a great loss for the game if you made it easier, as suggested in an earlier blog post.

Some puzzles/jumps took me 15-30 minutes to solve, but the satisfaction when I finally figured them out made me appreciate their level of difficulty even more. I can imagine that less patient players who are trying to work with their jumping skills instead of their brain can be frustrated by this. Prelude isn't about getting the jump right down to the millimeter, or having luck timing - it's about thinking.

You truly accomplished your goal: to make a mod with a rich back story and more challenging gameplay than the original.

I enjoyed Prelude right from the start, and those minor flaws I found isn't enough to lower my opinion of the game. I just wished that you hadn't removed the bug report forum as there were some small issues that I would've liked to report.

And, in the future, I hope you learn not to take the negative critique personally like you did with this game. It's totally unnecessary. You know that you did a good job, and so does thousands of other people.

Thanks for a wonderful (and free) gaming experience.

I am maybe in chamber 10 and I wish to end it all. Please add an incinerator somewhere so I can jump into it over and over to release some frustration.

Hi,
I thouhgt I'd just left a note to thank you guys for Prelude. I am currently in room 14 and immensely enjoying it: it's an immersive and rewarding experience. A tad difficult but that's the point of the mod, isn't it? (and I'm definitely not a hardcore gamer). I don't find anything wrong in the sequence "find out what you have to do"->"try it till you get it right"->"quicksave and go on". That is how I went with the original Portal, indeed.

Nicolas, don't be put off by the hatemail. That's part of the internet.
I guess the sheer number of downloads shows the importance and the success of what you've done.
Thanks again.

I'm confused... It says in this story:

"Not that we care so much, we don't need this website up and running to work on the mod"

Then in the "Forums Offline" page, this:

"I don't like this idea, but I need to shut it down for a while, we need the processing power of the server to work on the mod."

"Nintendo tends to make their best and most profitable work when they flatout ignore the fanbase."

Sited here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/UnpleasableFanbase

I think that this advice is helpful, not just with Nintendo, but here as well. It also pays to know that I am talking about the whiners too, as opposed to the whiners AND those trying to help.

Love the mod, even if it is a little too tough... :)

Server and Website are not the same thing. We don't need the website to work. So, If it start to annoy us while working on the mod, we'll just shut down the website, and that's all.

OK, i`m having trouble with some of the levels too. but i wont get amd or anything. because its not something i control, if i cant finish a puzzle game, i dont go and attack the makers do i?

oh and btw, i cant finish the game, from after glados, my pc lags my butt off, even tried to run in 640x480 but the lag never stopped.
too bad.
(i wont DDos you for that though)

Why would you need the "processing power of the server" to work on the mod then? I'm having trouble understanding that.

Could have been a test attack. Not because someone hates you, but because the hacker needs to test his tools on something.

@fire.esper

Doubt it... It's pretty 'low' to test it on a website like this...

BTW script kiddies with too many bots still exist, so if someone thought the game was so hard that it was worth griefing the makers over it they just make themselves look stupid...

@Mr Scumbag:
Because we use it for many other tasks that I won't describe here to avoid beeing attacked on these specific points.

I really can't understand what kind of a dumbass could do something like this. I am not annoyed, I just feel sorry for those pathetic worms who have no other idea of showing that they dislike something than by planning an indirect, coward attack.

That's plain hate. Such people are another reason tu use condoms...

First of all i want to thank you and congratulate you for this incredible work of art. the game was much more challenging then portal and yet not too hard, it took me about 6 hours to finish it, a bit longer then portal.
I was surprised that you used a software for voicing humans while valve used a human to voice a computer, this was a complete reversal from the original game and it confused me and made me think that there is a twist in the end and that GLaDos is trying to trick the player into thinking humans control the complex so this is the main flow and i think you might want to reedit the game with voice talents.
The other thing that really got me upset is that the commentary was in french, is there really no English version?
Over all the game is better then the original and there are only few minor glitches.
I honestly wasn't expecting such an amazing project but you nailed it. GOOD WORK!

P.S

ignore the flames, those are kids that are too stupid to finish the game.

I find it incredibly funny that people are getting so worked up over a free mod.

If it were a commercial game, then their anger might just be justifiable, but even so, to DDOS attack the site is just plain silly.

Seriously, DDoSing a website is as easy as opening a program, putting in a URL and hitting enter. Don't feel too offended; sometimes people will DDoS a site just because they said 1 bad thing or they couldn't complete a certain level on a game made by the site.

Keep your spirits high and keep up the good work.

I'd personally feel offended if this game was any /easier/. You have a good balance I think, and a well needed difficulty level.

  October 13, 2008 8:18 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said :
I beat the game just a few minutes ago and i have to say it was impressive, it was well done from beginning to end and yes EVERYTHING is beatable (anyone who says it is'nt just needs to learn how to play) but i want to ask something

you seemed to leave the ending open for a sequil maybe a portal: prelude 2? i think it would be great if you decided to make a prelude 2 although the ending...might leave it open it might not its a little hard to parse out >.>

theres only one bug i found in the game in chapter 08 before glados's activation, when you go into the observation room where you see the portal gun you CAN use a chair to break the glass open and get it BEFORE glados is activated, this causes the game to be unable to progress AFTER she is activated and well...i had to redo chapter 8, with the exeption of this one bug i found the game perfect.

and about the attacker: dont worry its probly someone who has NO idea how to play and is takeing out his anger by acting immiturely, dont dwell on it

Answer to Ido Levy.

Hey Ido, if you want to show how good you are with a mouse and a portal, go stuck a mouse in our @ss inside a portal to show how
expert with a portal and a mouse you are.

Is you that are the arrogant stupid freak here.

Who made you better than the other people that play this game.

I don´t agree with any offesnses to the developers, but your arrogant scumbags don´t have the right either to say what others should say or not about their problems with playng a game.
