How to install Portal Prelude with the free Portal.

Hey, I made this tutorial when I couldn't get it to work. Hope it helps people.

To Install Portal Prelude, by Dootuz

This is for Windows 7 64bit
(For 32 bit just don’t include the "(x86)" in anything and it should be fine)

1.    Install Portal
2.    Install Portal: Prelude
3.    Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods
4.    Now make a new folder in C:\ and call it “Program1” without the quotes (Yes Program1, just Program messes with something with Windows)
5.    In C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods there is a folder called “portal prelude”
6.    Rename it from “portal prelude” and delete the space, make it “portalprelude”
7.    Now take it and copy it to the folder C:\Program1
8.    Now go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\ (USERNAME)\portal
9.    Now make a shortcut of "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\(USERNAME)\portal\hl2.exe"
10.    Now take that shortcut and place it in C:\Program1
11.    Now name the short cut “Portal Prelude”
12.    Now right click the short cut and go to properties
13.    Now under Target add at the end of the Target field, -applaunch 400 -game C:\Program1\portalprelude (I got this code off another video, for doing something close but not the same thing, the code (after modifying it) works now. for this).
14.    Then make a shortcut of that shortcut and place it on your desktop.
15.    Play the game.

Good, thanks for doing it.
As I said on our emails, that seems a better solution than overwriting Portal.
I'll take a look into linking this tonight.

Re: How to install Portal Prelude with the free Portal.

A few questions:

1)  Can we move "portalprelude" to Program1 instead of copying it? (To conserve space)
2)  If we use %20 in the shortcut's Target field, could we keep the space in the "portal prelude" folder(s)?
3)  Does "Program1" need to be "Program1", or can it be whatever besides "Program" (ex: "Prelude")?

EDIT:
2)  A:  Seemingly no.
3)  A:  Apparently yes.

Re: How to install Portal Prelude with the free Portal.

I follow up to step 13, but I keep getting the message that the "...name in the Target box is not valid."

Should the full target name be:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\(USERNAME)\portal\hl2.exe-applaunch 400 -game C:\Program1\portalprelude"
?

Re: How to install Portal Prelude with the free Portal.

For me this only works when steam already is running, so this is no real improvement and only bypasses the shortcut in the games list. Otherwise, there's an even better way of doing this:

1. Install Portal: Prelude normally (to the default path)
2. Browse to "C:\Program files\Steam\steamapps\<steamname>\portal\"
3. Drop "hl2.exe" via right click to the desktop and choose to create a shortcut
4. Right Click the shortcut and choose "Properties"
5. In the target field, append the following:

Code:

 -applaunch 400 -game "../../SourceMods/portal prelude"

In my example (WinXP 32bit, German, free promotional Portal offer) I use this line:
"C:\Programme\Steam\steamapps\<steamname>\portal\hl2.exe" -game "../../SourceMods/portal prelude" which also works fine without the -applaunch 400 parameter.
6. Adapt the icon if you want and click "OK".

This way you neither need to rename the "portal prelude" folder nor have to create an extra one.

Re: How to install Portal Prelude with the free Portal.

Hi,
first thanks for this trick

otherwise I've found a easier way to launch Prelude :
1. In steam : add a non Steam game
2. Browse to hl2.exe (in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\[USER]\portal")
3. Now right clic on the new shortcut on the Steam window's and clic on "Properties"
4. In the Target field add  -applaunch 400 -game "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods\portal prelude"

Tested on Windows Seven 64bit

Re: How to install Portal Prelude with the free Portal.

I've done every step but when I click on the desktop shortcut this error pops up saying "Setup file 'gameinfo.txt' doesn't exist in subdirectory 'C:\Program1\portalprelude'."
Could someone help me out with this?

Re: How to install Portal Prelude with the free Portal.

I have , somehow without making shortcuts, done it...
This is tested on Windows 7 32bit And 64bit.
I didn't even HAVE to change the target, neither make a SINGLE shortcut..

All I did to play it was install Portal & Portal Prelude.
This also works on Vista and older,so everybody , listen out!
I installed it in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods and it just appeared on my list!
I didn't have to launch "hl2" in the portal folder.
If Dootuz put advice that didn't help you, have a look at this!

NOTE!If you launch the game, sometimes a blank screen comes up and REALLY RANDOM MUSIC comes up.
The music is the the StudioDomo scene.
Sometimes it will really come up.
But eventually it'll come up.
This also works with other mods like Portal Map Editor!

Thanks to you for seeing this post.
Give feedback to me if it doesn't work.

Yes, it tried to do it but it's the same on the shortcut.
But it works with me on other ways to do it.

Re: How to install Portal Prelude with the free Portal.

The method I used:

1)Open Notepad

2)For 32bit windows, copy and paste this:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\USERNAME\portal\hl2.exe" -applaunch 400 -game "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\SourceMods\portal prelude"

For 64bit windows, copy and paste this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\USERNAME\portal\hl2.exe" -applaunch 400 -game "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\SourceMods\portal prelude"

Instead of C you can use the drive letter where steam is installed. Replace USERNAME with your user name!

3)Go to file->save as... and save the file on your Desktop as PortalPrelude.bat or any other name, as long as it ends with .bat

4)Open Steam

5)Go to your Desktop and double click on PortalPrelude.bat

6)Play the game

After that, every time you want to play prelude, just run steam and then PortalPrelude.bat

AHH I finally was able to save the file "PortalPrelude.bat" to my desktop. I was getting an unknown filetype error. But I finally remembered to open Stream and it was all good. Thanks for the steps!
