Portal: Prelude on Mac

I have Steam and Portal installed on my Mac since yesterday, and it rocks big_smile
So today I tried to run Portal: Prelude, so far: no luck.

I used the installer on a windows xp virtual machine, to install in Steams (the Mac version) 'Steam Content/sourcemods' folder.
When I launched Steam, the mod showed up fine in the library, but on runtime it failed.

Here is the Console output:

13-05-10 23:51:13    [0x0-0x101101].com.valvesoftware.steam[74049]    Game update: AppID 400 "", ProcID 11415, IP 0.0.0.0:0

The referred crash report is not saved by steam but is created by Mac OS X on every application crash, and probably doesn't contain any useful information.

I'm thinking the lines I emphasized might cause the crash, I just have no idea how to solve them.

The only 'hl2' subdirectory I could find is inside the 'portal' game folder, and there is indeed no 'gameinfo.txt'.
Should there be one? It doesn't seem very likely as that file isn't there on the windows version either.

Any help on this? roll

Re: Portal: Prelude on Mac

We're not going to provide any support for Mac OS.
We don't have macs to try and we sure don't have the time nor motivation to do it either.

Re: Portal: Prelude on Mac

That's fine with me, maybe the community can figure out how to make it work!
It could be very simple.

Re: Portal: Prelude on Mac

It could be very simple indeed but it could also be impossible. I already faced this problem of missing gameinfo.txt, it basically means that Portal needs to load the common HL2 files that were available at the time Portal was released (there has always been a part of HL2 that was common to all Valve games). And it looks like these files cannot be found. This does not sound promising to me.

Re: Portal: Prelude on Mac

I was trying to achieve the same thing as Microcuts and encountered the same errors.

Finally, I found a workaround:

1) Extract the "portal prelude" Folder from the downloaded .exe-File (Either using a virtual machine or 7zip)
2) Copy the "portal prelude"-folder to "/Users/YOUR_OSX_USERNAME/Documents/Steam Content/YOUR_STEAM_USERNAME/portal/"
3) Rename the existing "portal"-folder to something else (e.g. "portal_old")
4) Rename the "portal prelude"-folder to "portal"
5) Start Portal via Steam
6) Enjoy Portal:Prelude

Have fun!

Re: Portal: Prelude on Mac

Seems a bit dangerous but ultimately it should work indeed.
Now the only problem is that we distributed the mod in an EXE file thinking Steam would never get ported to anything (it was back in 2008). We could put a ZIP version on the website, but I'm afraid we'd not be able to cope with the increasing traffic, plus I really don't have the time to do this right now, I'm in the middle of the release of another project. We'll see.

Re: Portal: Prelude on Mac

That works great!
Though it might give some trouble as Steam would think the real portal is in there. With an update it might overwrite Portal Prelude files.

And about the traffic, other websites host the files right? So no big deal I think, just contact them and let them include a zip version, with a nice readme on how to use it on Mac.

What's the other project? I'm loving this one it seems smile

Re: Portal: Prelude on Mac

Steam doesn't overwrite Prelude (at least on my machine), it just complains that it's unable to sync with "the cloud".

Just to be on the safe side, I'm currently playing prelude only using Steam's offline mode

Re: Portal: Prelude on Mac

Sorry for the double post, I spent the whole day playing after installing the game (thanks viruz.360, your install suggestion worked perfectly), and IT WAS GREAT.

Thanks so much for this awesome mod, I loved being able to go through another series of tests, I think I enjoy passing them a little too much...

i don't understand how to extract a file from an exe; i looked up 7zip, and it's a windows program.  is there a way to extract the folder in mac os x?  if not, i also have windows, but i still wouldn't know how to get a folder out of an exe.

thank you

Re: Portal: Prelude on Mac

I've tried extracting the file with Ez7z for Mac but it says the compression is password protected.  Any idea how to get around that?
