Portal works fine, as do HL2 and TF2. When I open Portal Prelude the game freezes instantly. I see the 1st "think with portals" image, begin to hear music, but when I use the mouse or keyboard I get a "program not responding" error message.
Vista 64, tons of ram and a c2duo cpu. Any ideas?

I know that Half-Life 2 has problems in 64-bit mode (I used run Vista 64-bit). This may also be the case with other Source games. Try launching it in 32-bit mode. You can do that by typing "-32bit" into the launch options (right-click > Properties > Set launch options...). I hope this helps.

I'm using Windows 7 64-bit and having the same issue. I did notice if I leave it for a while I do get to see the fuzzy white chair loading screen, then it just crashes...
i find it strange that i can hear some opening video but can't see it...
i hope someone can find a solution soon.

I ran into a similar, if no the same glitch. I am also on Win7 x64. The following worked for me....
-Right click on "Portal: Prelude" and select "Properties"
-Under "Properties" select "SET LAUNCH OPTIONS..."
-Set the options (which should be blank) to: "-safe" (without the quotes)
-Click "OK" to save the launch parameters and "CLOSE" out of "Properties"
-Fire up the game (will be windowed 640x480 resolution) and set the graphics settings to your preferences. If you can apply the new settings and it works, exit the game and disable the "-safe" launch option and you should be good to go. If you apply the settings and it crashes, ALT+TAB out of the game, close it manually and try again, still in safe-mode. It worked for me 1st time, and first launch after removing safe-mode, though I may just have been lucky.
I hope this solves your issue.
