Its a glitch in the engine, probably. If you go through a portal with an object in hand, you can get the object on the other side of a 'wall' or anything that is thin. It was able to be done in Portal, and he probably just flipped though the portal on the ground holding the object, and it went into the gated area. If you need a video, i might be putting one up later.
