So I launch the game, very excited....and when I step on the button, the cube comes out of the portal and my game crashes.
I tried again.
After the I stepped on the button this time, the cube came out and the portal opened...I walked up to it then the game crashed.
I tried again.
got threw the portal, crash
again
set portal video settings to "0"
got threw portal, crashed
again
got to second dialogue, crash
again
got to the door after dialogue, crash
now it crashed every time I get to that door...even with video settings at normal
it's very odd, and I've yet to see the same problem posted, I tried the "-novid" but same problem. It keeps crashing saying "hl2 has stopped working" I running this on Vista, and regular portal works fine.
Any idea on the problem?

Exact same problem. I'm running XP SP3, with integrated Intel 950 GM graphics so i have to have "+mat_forcehardwaresync 0" in launch options, i also have "-window" because i like windowed mode. Crash always seems to happen if the cube hits me coming through the portal or just after I've gone through (having avoided the cube).

Have you guys tried reinstalling the game? Do you have other mods that modify the original portal files? Or maybe HL files? If so then try reinstalling those too...
Any other abnormalities?...
I run XP SP3 as well, but that should not be the problem... If the problem does persist then it's likely to be a rendering error which has to do with your video card...

Well I tried reinstalling it, but no luck. I can run hl2 mods good, they'll usually slow down if its really detailed...but portal runs perfectly. Even if it is the video card, it shouldn't crash, just slow down a bunch.

I got it, I tried putting different types of launch options, and I finally got it. ^_^
The problem was that the game was automatically setting my directx to 8.1 instead of 9.0
I used the launch option +mat_forcehardwaresync 0 -dxlevel 81 +mat_bumpmap 0 +mat_specular 0 +map_background none -autoconfig
but I changed "dxlevel 81" to "dxlevel 90"
all it did was change my directx level on the game to 9.0, but now it works. So I'm happy

His problem was solved, and I'm guessing an intel grafics chip (possibly in a laptop or onboard) or outdated hardware...
It's quite possible he is not reading these forums anymore.

I was asking since i had the same error, once i got past that I keep getting BSoD, so maybe somehow he got it to work with the same graphics card as me.
