<description>Topic: 'Prelude not showing up in Games list, while everything done right!?

Message: I've downloaded and installed Portal:Prelude and it's in the right place. I downloaded Source SDK base and ran it. I ran Portal again to make sure, then I restarted Steam. When I opened it again, the games list was exactly as before, with no Portal: Prelude.I'm pretty sure I've done everything right. I brought Portal legitimately off Steam, and have been frustrated for ages trying to get it to work.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

<description>Topic: At the end of Lv 19 without my companion.

Message: That sucks.&#160; I thought Lv 18 was a trick and didn't think I would need the cube.&#160; It looked so difficult I thought we were supposed to grind on it and then realize you could just stand on the button and shoot the wall inside the door.&#160; I got all the way to the top of the last part of Lv 19 before realizing that I needed the companion cube to throw in the fire.&#160; Now I am locked out (the bottom door closed at some point).I was thinking it was pretty involved when I was having to prop chairs or cameras so they would fall when I stepped on the button.&#160; Then I would run back and shoot the inside wall before the door chucked out the chair or camera so I could get in there.&#160; I guided the orb to the receivers by propping up boxes from under the stairway at angles so the orb would bounce where I needed it.&#160; Anyhow, wish there weren't so many ways to approach it because I think I am screwed now.&#160; I could probably load an old game and start over on 18, but watching the walkthrough makes me not want to even try that. Hope everyone gets a laugh at my mistake.&#160; Glad to know lodging chairs in the doors isn't required to beat the game.&#160; LOL

<description>Topic: Unknown file type.... (sigh)Vista sucks...

Message: I signed up for this site to ask one question as many of you probably have. Before I go into details, yes I have a legitiment copy of Portal, yes I have Steam, yes I have restarted it many times, yes I have downloaded it into SourceMods, and no it is not a broken or corrupt file.First we'll start with my system. Windows Vista Home Basic. I don't know the exacts but I know that it is compatible with portal. Now the error, When I download it, I download it straight to SourceMods. Takes about 3 hours, yes? There is no icon on the desktop as previously mentioned in another forum I was in. There is no icon on steam. There is an icon in SourceMods, Just a blank piece of paper with the upper right corner folded like the files in steamapps. I go to Portal start it up and select Bonus Levels and select Import. I go to that file and choose it. It asks me what program I want to open it with. I clicked Portal. It changed the icon to a piece of paper folded in the upper right corner with a mini steam player icon on it and begins to open steam. So now I've deleted Portal: Prelude and reinstalled it several times and it keeps doing the same thing which is getting very time and memory consuming.

Message: Either you are playing with a fairly outdated version, or you really suck at Portal. And I mean it, because with the lastest versions, this gap is so easy to cross that you don't even need portals anymore. So please refrain from spreading false rumors about the mod. This part was too hard at first, we knew it and we fixed it. Now that's over, and even a two years old child could do it.

Message: I agree heartily with comment 2. I can't comment on the rest because, AFTER 2 HOURS OF TRYING, I still haven't been able to get onto the stupid platform in the second test chamber. I have tried every surface imaginable, I tried chaining portals for extra height, everything, but nothing, not even copying exactly what is shown in the walkthrough, actually gets me up there. In summary, after 1 test chamber completed, (and that by mad dashing for the elevator before I took lethal damage), I am already fed up with the game. The only this that took me this long in Portal was the final fight with GlaDOS, and at least that was more dynamic.I was really looking forward to this mod, and instead it is a complete letdown.

<description>Topic: Possible bug in portal engine chamber 19?

Message: I'm stuck on the first main room of chamber 19, and have encountered a possible bug in the momentum-through-portals bit of the engine. I'm trying to get enough momentum to fling up to the top room from the moving platform, but sometimes whenever I try to do successive flings from the stationary platform, I come out of the slanted platform coming straight up! My forwards momentum has just disappeared, and my upwards momentum is decreased as well! Obviously, this complicates things somewhat; for the last hour I've been trying this either the momentum bug happens &#38; I have to try again, or I aim a floor portal too far forwards and so don't re-fling, or I miss the moving platform with the gun. It is absolutely bloody infuriating, especially since I want to get onto the bits later on in this level. Has anyone else encountered this?

Valve recently said it was coming along with some new content for Left 4 Dead. But geez, can't they just release the damn SDK separately so that we can make our own custom content? I'm wondering if it's because they don't want custom content to appear in case they thought it could be a good idea to SELL their own content. Let's hope not.

I mean, you can see that when you put this chair, this computer here, you were thinking about it. Whatever, although there were some nasty situations like me throwing my mouse on the bureau because not being able to make the jump... but the end of the game just killed all the bad feelings in me. This thing is better than most of the crap that the West game-industry throws at us FFS. Yes, I DO mean it. <description>Topic: yet more thoughts

Message: After watching my friend play this painstakingly hard mod, I finally decided to actually play it about three months later.First off, I love Portal. I actually rarely play video games at all, but for some reason Portal captivated me and I've been obsessed with it for a while. I'm also a huge fan of map packs and try to download as many of those as I can. I was really hyped up for this mod because it seemed like an awesome idea.I appreciate the amount of work put into this mod. Really, I do. But for something so hyped up, it ultimately led to disappointment. Did you even have people test this? (Besides your friends, they won't tell you anything.)First off: Trial and error gaming. I understand that some people like this kind of gaming. But that's not what Portal is all about. Yeah yeah, I know what you're gonna say: &#34;I never intended to make a game like Portal.&#34; But being that it's a Portal mod, would it kill to keep some spirit of the original game? This the kind of gaming where, no matter how many times you play a test chamber, you won't get better at it because the way to beat it always relies on precision, timing and 100% accuracy that usually happens by accident. It'd be one thing if this was just another really hard map pack, but if you were trying to tie this in with the Portal storyline, you should have realized that mindless killing of the player and using &#34;get the timing right or you WILL die&#34; puzzles is not how Aperture Science works.2. Instead of making puzzles that are hard to solve, this game uses &#34;fake difficulty.&#34; In the second test chamber, where you have no control over the placement of the blue portal yet, it's placed just right so that a fling puzzle that should be completely easy and doable in 2 seconds is made frustratingly hard because no matter how many times you do what is obvious, you fall short of the platform. In the third chamber, the &#34;haha that wall was useless&#34; thing is totally not in the spirit of Aperture Science at all, and just creates more frustration for the player. Another example, at the end of test chamber 11, you surround the elevator entrance by turrets in a dark room, killing the player instantly. If that's not enough, you also do this as soon as you get the portal gun the first place.3. Something essential to a game is a difficulty curve. This game doesn't utilize that at all, and I really don't think I need to say what has already been said countless times on that issue.4. The voices are atrocious. You had the entire Internet to ask for English voice actors. Don't tell me you &#34;didn't have the resources&#34; to use real voices instead of text to speech programs. You could have posted on your blog, &#34;Hey, anyone wanna do some English voice acting for me?&#34; But even so, the writing feels like it was written by a 12 year old. Point of note: &#34;edgy&#34; dialog does not automatically mean &#34;good.&#34; You should have had some people look over your script and help write it.I appreciate how much work was spent on this, but I really think this was a good idea executed poorly. These test chambers could have worked if this was just another map pack, but as a continuation of the Portal storyline, it really doesn't fit.If you want an example of a good Portal mod, download Portal: The Flash Map Pack. It's so well made it could very well be dubbed Portal 2. Why that wasn't as hyped up as Prelude is a mystery. It has everything that's great about Portal and even creates new game mechanics.Better luck with future mods.edit: On a brighter note, test chamber 10 (the one where you're walking on the ceiling and the button is on the wall) was actually pretty fun. The rest of the game should have been like that.
